About This Project
The homeowners had done their research before calling us. They knew they wanted large-format porcelain slab tile and they knew it had to be done properly or it was not worth doing at all. That is the right starting point for a project like this. Large slab tile is one of the most visually impressive finishes you can put in a bathroom, but it is also one of the least forgiving during installation. You cannot fake it.
The biggest thing people underestimate with large-format tile is how much the substrate matters. Any variation in the floor or wall flatness shows up as lippage once the tile is in edges sitting at different heights, which catches the light and ruins the whole effect. We addressed this before anything else. Self-levelling compound on the floor, wall framing checked and corrected, everything brought to within the flatness tolerance that oversized tile requires. That preparation added time to the schedule but it is why the finished surface looks the way it does.
Waterproofing went in next across all wet areas using the Wedi Pro certified system. Then the tile. The slab format runs continuously across the floor and up the feature wall, which is what makes the room feel so much larger than its actual footprint. Fewer grout lines means the eye travels further without interruption. We kept the joints as tight as the format allows and used a grout colour that sits back rather than competing with the tile.
Fixtures and trim were installed last, with every transition finished tight. The bathroom was inspected before handover. Everything performing correctly, every edge sealed, no exceptions.
