Kitchen Renovations Toronto
Custom Cabinetry | Tile Backsplash | Countertops | Renomark Certified (BILD Member)
The kitchen is the room in a home that gets used the most, remembered the most, and noticed first by anyone walking through. A kitchen renovation done right changes how a home functions day to day and adds more value per dollar spent than almost any other renovation project. We renovate kitchens throughout Toronto and the GTA and bring the same standard to this work that we bring to our bathroom renovations — detailed planning, proper execution, and a finished product that holds up.
We are Renomark Certified (BILD Members) and have been renovating homes across the Greater Toronto Area since 2007. Kitchen renovations are a natural extension of our tile, waterproofing, and craftsmanship expertise. Backsplash tile, floor tile, countertop installation, and the detailed finishing work that separates a good kitchen from a great one — this is where our background shows.
Every kitchen renovation starts with an in-home consultation where we look at the space, talk through your goals, and discuss what's realistic within your budget. We help you think through layout, cabinetry options, countertop materials, tile selection, lighting, and storage. Our job is to bring your vision to life with materials and methods that will still look and function well 15 years from now.
We serve all of Toronto and the GTA including Mississauga, Etobicoke, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Oakville, and Burlington.
Tile Expertise in Every Kitchen We Build
Most homeowners don't realize that the tile work in a kitchen renovation is often the most visible and durable element. The backsplash behind the range, the floor tile underfoot, the grout lines that stay clean or don't. We are Wedi Pro Certified tile installers with years of experience selecting and installing tile in kitchens across the GTA. When we advise you on tile, we're speaking from experience, not a sales floor.

RENOVATION TYPES
Types of Kitchen Renovations We Do
Not every kitchen renovation is the same project. Here's how we typically categorize scope with clients:
Cosmetic Refresh
New cabinet doors and hardware, fresh countertops, a tile backsplash, and updated lighting. The existing cabinet boxes stay, the layout stays, and the plumbing stays where it is. The biggest visual impact for the least disruption and cost. A well-executed cosmetic refresh can transform a dated kitchen without a major renovation timeline.
Full Gut Renovation
Everything comes out: cabinets, countertops, flooring, appliances, sometimes the ceiling. The space is rebuilt from the walls out with new cabinetry, countertops, tile backsplash, flooring, lighting, and fixtures. The layout may change or stay the same. This is the most common scope for kitchens in Toronto homes built before 2000.
Open-Concept Conversion
Removing a wall between the kitchen and an adjacent dining room or living room to create an open-concept layout. Very common in older Toronto and GTA homes built with enclosed kitchens. We assess whether the wall is load-bearing, coordinate structural work and permits, and then complete the full kitchen renovation to tie the new space together.
Kitchen Addition or New Build
Building a kitchen from scratch in a newly finished basement, an addition, or a secondary suite. We build these ground-up including rough-in coordination, cabinetry, countertops, tile, flooring, and fixtures. Common for basement in-law suites and garden suites across the GTA.
What a Kitchen Renovation Includes
A full kitchen renovation typically covers some or all of the following. We scope each project based on what you actually need:
Custom Cabinetry
Semi-custom and custom cabinet boxes, doors, and hardware. We work with kitchen designers and cabinet suppliers throughout the GTA and help you navigate the options between stock, semi-custom, and fully custom cabinetry. Shaker, flat-panel, raised-panel, and more. Lead time for custom cabinetry is typically 6 to 10 weeks.
Countertops
Quartz, granite, quartzite, marble, porcelain slab, and butcher block. We supply and install countertops or work with your supplier. Quartz is the most popular choice in GTA kitchen renovations for durability and maintenance reasons. We advise on edge profiles, sink cutout options, and the tradeoffs between different materials.
Tile Backsplash
Subway tile, large-format porcelain, stone mosaic, handmade ceramic, herringbone, and everything in between. The backsplash is one of the most visible elements in a kitchen and one of the areas where our tile expertise shows most. Proper surface preparation, layout planning, and precise installation make the difference between a backsplash that looks right and one that doesn't.
Flooring
Tile flooring, luxury vinyl plank, and hardwood installation. For kitchens specifically, large-format porcelain tile floors are extremely popular because of their durability, water resistance, and low maintenance. We install floor tile with leveling systems to ensure a flat finish with consistent grout joints throughout.
Lighting
Under-cabinet lighting, pot light installation, pendant lights above a kitchen island, and updated electrical. Good kitchen lighting is layered — task lighting over work surfaces, ambient lighting from above, and accent lighting inside open shelving or glass-front cabinets. We work with licensed electricians on all electrical modifications.
Plumbing and Fixtures
Sink, faucet, and dishwasher rough-in. Pot-filler installation above the range. Island plumbing for a prep sink. Water filtration line to the fridge. We coordinate with licensed plumbers for any plumbing that requires permits and handle the installation of all kitchen fixtures ourselves.
Kitchen Island
Custom island design and installation, including seating overhangs, built-in storage, electrical outlets, and pendant lighting above. Islands are a central feature request in almost every open-concept kitchen renovation. We design islands that function well for the actual household — whether that's a large prep surface, casual seating, or both.
Storage and Organization
Pull-out drawers, built-in pantry cabinetry, corner solutions (lazy Susans, pull-out shelves), pot and pan drawers, and drawer organizers built into the cabinetry itself. Storage design is one of the most important parts of a kitchen renovation that homeowners often underinvest in, and one of the areas where a thoughtful renovation makes the most difference to daily life.
MATERIAL GUIDE
Choosing a Kitchen Countertop Material
Countertop material is one of the biggest decisions in a kitchen renovation. Here's a practical comparison of the options we work with most:
HOW IT WORKS
Our Kitchen Renovation Process
Free In-Home Consultation
We come to your home, look at the kitchen, and talk through your goals, timeline, and budget. We discuss what's realistic and give you a clear sense of scope and cost range before anything is committed. No pressure, no vague estimates, and no surprises later.
Design and Material Selection
We help you select cabinetry, countertops, tile, flooring, and fixtures. For clients who want design support, we can bring in our 3D renovation design service to visualize the finished kitchen before any work starts. Cabinetry and countertops are ordered at this stage so lead times don't delay the project.
Written Quote and Contract
You receive a full line-by-line written quote before any work begins. As a Renomark Certified (BILD Member) contractor, all projects are covered by a written contract that protects both parties. You know exactly what you're paying for and when each stage of the project will be completed.
Demolition and Renovation
Existing kitchen is removed cleanly and the space is assessed for any surprises before rebuilding begins. We protect adjacent areas from dust and debris and keep the worksite organized throughout. Any plumbing or electrical changes are roughed in before cabinetry installation begins.
Installation and Finishing
Cabinetry is installed, countertops are templated and set, tile backsplash and flooring are installed, fixtures and appliances are connected, and all trim and finishing details are completed. The kitchen is cleaned and handed back to you for a walkthrough before we consider the project done.

Kitchen Renovations in Toronto and GTA Homes: What to Expect
The housing stock across Toronto and the GTA varies widely and so does what a kitchen renovation involves in practice. Here's what we commonly encounter:
-
Pre-war and post-war homes in Toronto and Etobicoke often have kitchens that were updated once in the 1970s or 80s and haven't been touched since. The plumbing and electrical usually need at least partial updating, and there may be surprises behind the walls. We budget for contingencies and communicate clearly when we find them.
-
1990s and 2000s homes in Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, and Mississauga typically have builder kitchens that are functional but dated — oak or honey maple cabinets, laminate countertops, and tile backsplashes that reflect early 2000s trends. These kitchens renovate very well and don't usually have the surprise factor of older stock.
-
Open-concept conversions are most common in Toronto semis and detached homes from the 1950s through 1980s. These homes were built with closed kitchens and formal dining rooms. Removing the wall between them is the single change that makes the most difference to how the home feels and functions.
-
Condo kitchens in Toronto require building management approval for most renovation work. We are experienced with the condo renovation process, including submitting scope of work documentation to property management and protecting common areas during the project. See our condo renovations page for more detail.
Frequently Asked Questions
A cosmetic refresh starts around $25,000 to $40,000. A full gut renovation with new cabinetry, quartz countertops, tile backsplash, and flooring runs $45,000 to $75,000. A high-end custom kitchen renovation with custom cabinetry, stone countertops, and an island runs $75,000 to $130,000. Open-concept conversions with structural wall removal add cost and typically run $65,000 to $130,000 all-in. We provide a free in-home quote with a full line-by-line breakdown. Book yours here.
A cosmetic refresh takes 2 to 3 weeks. A full gut renovation typically takes 4 to 8 weeks on-site. Custom cabinetry has a fabrication lead time of 6 to 10 weeks which we order before demolition begins. An open-concept conversion with structural work can run 8 to 12 weeks total. We provide a project timeline before starting and are upfront about any delays from supply chain or unforeseen conditions.
Yes, and tile work is one of the things we do best. Backsplash tile, floor tile, and any tile work around an island are handled directly by us, not subcontracted. We are Wedi Pro Certified tile installers with years of experience. Whether you've chosen a simple subway tile or a complex pattern with multiple materials, we have the experience to install it correctly.
Yes. This is a common request in older Toronto homes with enclosed kitchens. The process starts with determining whether the wall is load-bearing, which requires assessment by a structural engineer. If it is load-bearing, a properly sized beam is required. We coordinate the structural assessment, permits, beam installation, and then complete the full kitchen renovation to integrate the open space. We handle the whole process so you're not managing multiple contractors.
For most clients, quartz is the practical choice — it's durable, requires no sealing, and comes in a wide range of colours and finishes. For clients who want a natural stone look without the maintenance commitment of marble, quartzite is an excellent option. For clients who want the absolute most durable surface and a large-format stone look, porcelain slab is increasingly popular. We discuss the tradeoffs for your specific situation during the consultation and are honest about what makes sense for how you actually use your kitchen.
A cosmetic kitchen renovation that does not change the plumbing, electrical, or structural elements typically does not require a building permit in Toronto. If you are moving plumbing, adding circuits, removing a load-bearing wall, or changing the layout in a way that affects structural elements, permits are required. We advise you clearly on permit requirements before any work begins and coordinate the permit process when needed. Unpermitted structural or plumbing work is a risk we don't take on regardless of what a homeowner prefers.
