Chris Tile & Renovations is based in Mississauga and has been completing bathroom renovations across Toronto and the GTA for over 15 years. Toronto is one of our most active markets and also one of the most technically demanding. The housing here is older, the bathrooms are tighter, and the walls often hold surprises. We know how to handle all of it.

Toronto's renovation market is different from the suburbs. You're dealing with pre-war semis in Riverdale where the bathroom was last touched in 1962. Century-old detached homes in the Annex and Rosedale with original plaster walls and no moisture barrier behind the tile. Leaside bungalows where the bathroom is 65 square feet and needs to be completely reimagined. East York backsplits with three separate bathrooms at different levels, all needing work. The variety is significant and the job demands genuine experience.

Bathroom renovation in Toronto by Chris Tile & Renovations

We work across all of Toronto including downtown, Midtown, the east end, the west end, North York, and Scarborough. Detached homes, semis, condos, and everything in between. Whether you want a full gut renovation with walk-in shower and heated floors or a practical refresh of a small semi bathroom that just needs to function better, we approach every project the same way: proper waterproofing, quality materials, honest pricing, and a crew that shows up on schedule.

Every Toronto project is backed by Wedi Pro Certified waterproofing, a written Renomark Certified contract, and permits through the City of Toronto when plumbing or structural work requires them. We are also Adaptiv Home and BuildABILITY certified for accessible bathroom renovations.

What Makes Toronto Bathroom Renovations Different

Toronto's housing stock spans over a century of construction, and what's inside a bathroom wall depends heavily on when and where the home was built. Here's what we encounter on a regular basis:

  • No waterproofing behind the original tile. In homes built before the 1980s, tile was typically set directly over plaster or wood substrate with no proper moisture barrier. When we open these walls we start completely fresh with Wedi Pro Certified waterproofing before a single tile goes up. This is not optional — it's the only way to do it right.
  • Outdated plumbing is common. Galvanized steel pipes in homes from the 1920s through 1960s are often corroded and need replacing. Cast iron drains are common in older Toronto homes and can require modification for modern fixtures. We assess plumbing honestly and clearly price any required work before we begin.
  • Knob and tube wiring is still present in many homes. Pre-war Toronto homes often have knob and tube electrical in or near the bathroom. This needs to be addressed before renovation work proceeds. We coordinate with licensed electricians when this comes up and work it into the project scope properly.
  • Tight spaces require real tile experience. A 45 square foot bathroom in a Leslieville semi is not a forgiving space. Layout planning, tile sizing, and fixture selection all matter more when there is no room for error. We've done hundreds of these and know how to make small Toronto bathrooms look and work like they were designed properly.
  • Condo renovations have their own rules. Building management requirements, noise restrictions, approved work hours, and coordination of elevator access all add complexity to condo bathroom renovations. We deal with this on a regular basis across Toronto's condo buildings and know how to keep projects on track within building management constraints.

WHERE WE WORK

Toronto Neighbourhoods We Serve

We work throughout the entire city of Toronto. Here's a breakdown of the main areas and what we typically encounter in each:

The Annex, Rosedale & Forest Hill

Some of Toronto's most valuable and oldest homes. Bathrooms in this tier of housing range from original Edwardian fixtures to poorly done 1970s renovations that are overdue for replacement. High-end master bathroom builds are common here. We approach these projects with the care the homes deserve.

Leslieville, Riverdale & Danforth

Pre-war semis and detached homes with small bathrooms and a lot of original character. Homeowners in these neighbourhoods have often done significant work on the rest of the house and want the bathroom to catch up. Full gut renovations with smart layouts and quality tile are the norm.

Leaside & Lawrence Park

Larger homes with more bathroom square footage, and homeowners with high renovation standards. Master bathroom renovations in Leaside and Lawrence Park are frequently among our larger projects with walk-in showers, heated floors, and premium finishes throughout.

The Beaches & East Toronto

A mix of older homes and some newer builds, with homeowners who invest seriously in their properties. Beach area homes often have unique layouts and we've completed renovations here that required creative problem-solving alongside quality tile and waterproofing work.

Cabbagetown & Trinity Bellwoods

Victorian and Edwardian rowhouses and semis where every renovation requires care and often uncovers the unexpected. These are exactly the kinds of homes we're experienced with. We open walls carefully, assess what's there, and build back properly.

North York

A wide range of housing from post-war bungalows and backsplits to newer high-rises and condo towers. We cover all of North York including Willowdale, Don Mills, York Mills, Bathurst Manor, and surrounding areas. Both house and condo bathroom renovations.

East York & Scarborough

Post-war bungalows and backsplits with original 1950s through 1970s bathrooms that are well overdue for renovation, and newer high-density buildings in Scarborough's centres. We work throughout East York and across Scarborough including Agincourt, Wexford, Clairlea, and Guildwood.

Downtown & Midtown Condos

We renovate bathrooms in condo buildings throughout downtown and Midtown Toronto. We're familiar with the rules, the logistics, and the process of working within building management requirements. We've handled condo renovations in dozens of Toronto buildings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Toronto tends to run slightly higher than GTA suburban rates due to older housing stock and the additional scope that often comes with pre-war homes. A cosmetic refresh starts around $15,000 to $22,000. A full gut renovation of a standard bathroom runs $28,000 to $50,000. A master bathroom renovation with walk-in shower, heated floors, and quality finishes typically runs $40,000 to $80,000. We provide a free in-home quote for every Toronto homeowner we meet with, with a full line-by-line breakdown before anything starts. Book yours here.

Older Toronto homes regularly have surprises behind the walls. In pre-war homes you might find tile set directly on plaster with no moisture barrier, galvanized steel plumbing that's corroded, or knob and tube wiring running near the bathroom. We've renovated hundreds of older Toronto bathrooms and know what to look for. We always give you a clear assessment of what we find during demolition and never proceed with additional work without your approval and pricing in hand.

Yes. We renovate bathrooms in Toronto condo buildings regularly, across downtown, Midtown, North York, and Scarborough. We're familiar with the process of working within condo management requirements: coordinating access, working within approved hours, protecting common areas, and handling permit applications when the building requires them. See our condo bathroom renovation page for more detail.

A cosmetic refresh takes 1 to 2 weeks. A full gut renovation takes 2 to 4 weeks. A master bathroom with all premium features takes 3 to 5 weeks. Older Toronto homes can occasionally add time if plumbing or electrical issues come up during demolition. We communicate clearly throughout and give you updated timelines the moment anything changes.

A cosmetic refresh with no structural, plumbing, or electrical changes typically does not require a permit. If we're moving plumbing, adding electrical circuits, or doing any structural work, a permit through the City of Toronto is required. We handle the permit application and inspection process for you when it's needed. We never skip permits when they're required — it protects you when you sell and ensures the work is done to code.
