Bathroom with Sauna Renovation

Project Overview

This Toronto project combined a full bathroom renovation with a custom sauna installation — one of the more technically demanding bathroom projects we take on. The scope covered complete demolition, a full tile installation throughout the bathroom, and a dedicated sauna build with heat-resistant materials and proper ventilation integration. The client wanted a spa-level experience at home without sacrificing the everyday functionality of the bathroom.

Tile Selection and Premium Materials

Material selection for a bathroom with a sauna requires more thought than a standard renovation. Tile in the sauna area needs to handle sustained high heat and significant temperature cycling without cracking, lifting, or absorbing moisture. We worked with the client to select porcelain and marble materials that perform well in both the wet bathroom environment and the dry heat of the sauna, maintaining a consistent aesthetic throughout. Every material was chosen for longevity, not just appearance.

Waterproofing and Substrate

For a project like this, waterproofing is not optional — it's the foundation everything else depends on. We applied our Wedi Pro Certified waterproofing system throughout the bathroom wet areas, with additional attention to the transitions between the bathroom floor, shower zone, and sauna threshold. These transition points are where failures typically occur in lesser installations. Proper substrate prep and a continuous waterproofing membrane are what separates a renovation that lasts 20 years from one that needs work in five. Custom Sauna Build

The sauna was built as an integrated part of the bathroom rather than a prefab unit dropped into a corner. The tile work was carried through to the sauna interior, creating a seamless visual connection between the two spaces. Bench positioning, door placement, and the relationship between the sauna and the shower were all considered during the planning phase.
