Bathroom Renovation — Large Porcelain Slab

Project Overview

This Toronto bathroom renovation centred on one of the most impactful choices a homeowner can make: switching to large-format porcelain slab tile. The project covered a full gut renovation, including demo, subfloor and wall preparation, waterproofing, and a complete tile installation using oversized porcelain slabs throughout the floor and walls. The result is a clean, modern space that feels significantly larger than its footprint.

Why Large-Format Porcelain Slab?

Large-format tiles — typically 24x24 inches or larger — have become a popular choice for Toronto bathroom renovations for good reason. Fewer grout lines mean the eye travels further without interruption, making even a modest bathroom feel open and spa-like. Porcelain slabs in particular offer excellent durability, low porosity, and are significantly easier to keep clean than smaller-format tiles with dense grout networks. For this project, the large slab format was used consistently across the floor and feature wall to reinforce a seamless, unbroken aesthetic.

Installation Challenges and Preparation

Large-format tile is unforgiving — it demands a flatter, more precisely prepared substrate than standard tile. Any variation in the floor or wall plane will telegraph through the finished surface as lippage (where tile edges sit at different heights), which ruins the visual effect entirely. We used a self-levelling system on the floor and addressed wall framing variations before waterproofing to ensure the substrate met the flatness tolerance required. Waterproofing and Finish

Our Wedi Pro Certified waterproofing system was applied throughout the wet areas before tiling. Grout joints were minimized to complement the large slab format and sealed after curing. Fixtures and trim were installed as a final stage, with every edge and transition finished to a tight standard.
